From the full meaning of the acronym “ISBN” which we have already pointed out, you will see that is international which means that it is not just limited to a particular place. It is also unique so you cannot find two or more books with the same ISBN number.
You may now have rushed to pick up any published book around you searching for its ISBN, well it looks like this; 978-0-434-45675-0. Don’t worry, we are going to break it down so you can fully understand why it looks like this. As you can already see from the example that we used, it is a thirteen digit number.
This thirteen digit number is divided into five parts and this demarcation is usually done by the use of spaces or hyphen. The first three numbers represent the international code, the next three numbers are the country identifier, the next three digits following that is the publisher identifier and the next three numbers is the title identifier followed by the last number which is the check digit.
If you have written a book and you want to publish it, hoping to see it displayed in bookstores and libraries then getting an ISBN is compulsory. You need it for any book publication that you want to carry out.
